A Celebration of Life: Remembering former Missouri Supreme Court Chief Justice John C. Holstein
We commemorate the legacy of retired judge and former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri, John C. Holstein, who passed away on December 31, 2022, at his home in Springfield. Holstein lived a storied life in service to the judiciary and left behind an undeniable legacy in the legal profession. His life would be celebrated on January 8 at Second Baptist Church in Springfield.
John C. Holstein: A Life Dedicated to Justice and Public Service
Justice Holstein, an enduring figure in Missouri’s judiciary, was known for his dedication to public service and the relentless pursuit of justice. His substantial contribution to legal education and the welfare of children remains an inspiration for those in the justice path.
Education and Military Service
Born and raised in Springfield, Holstein graduated Parkview High School in 1963 and later earned his bachelor’s degree in political science at Missouri State University. After obtaining his law degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law, he furthered his education with a master’s degree in Letters of the Law from the University of Virginia, while serving his time in the court.
Holstein also served our country as a commissioned officer from 1969, serving on active duty in the U.S. Army, Army Reserve and National Guard. He retired in 1997 with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel, honoring his commitment to serving our nation.
Journey in the Legal Profession
Holstein started his legal career in a West Plains law firm in 1970. He served as a trial judge for over a decade, starting from 1975 as a magistrate and probate judge in Howell County. By 1978, Holstein was elected an associate circuit judge in Howell County, and four years later, he became a circuit judge of the 37th Judicial Circuit, encompassing Carter, Howell, Oregon, and Shannon counties.
As a judge, Holstein oversaw a myriad of cases, from traffic violations and small claims to high-stakes disputes involving millions of dollars. His judicial acumen and utmost respect for the rule of law were consistently demonstrated, regardless of the gravity of the cases he handled.
From trial judge to Missouri Court of Appeals and finally ascending to the Supreme Court of Missouri, Holstein’s impressive career saw him participate in more than 1,500 reported cases and author approximately 300 majority or separate opinions.
The Legacy of Judge John C. Holstein
A tireless defender of the justice system, Holstein served in the state’s court system for nearly 27 years at every level. He retired in March 2002, remembering it as a great honor to serve the people of Missouri.
Post-retirement, Holstein continued to contribute to the legal community by joining private practice with the Springfield firm Shughart, Thompson & Kilroy (now Polsinelli) and later focusing his efforts on mediation and arbitration. His continued contribution to the legal profession and endeavors to foster professionalism among Missouri attorneys remain admirable.
Veteran, Beacon of Hope, and Advocate for Welfare
In addition to his legal work, Holstein was a community leader, serving as a formidable advocate for children’s welfare and a supporter of Legal Services of Southwest Missouri. He was a founding member and chairperson of the Central States Judicial Council on Child Support Enforcement, manifesting his steadfast dedication to public service.
Survived by his wife of more than 57 years, three daughters and sons-in-law, and twelve grandchildren, John C. Holstein leaves behind a stirring legacy – not just as a steadfast servant of the law but as a loving family man. His life is a testament to unyielding dedication, impeccable integrity, and profound humaneness – an inspiration for generations to come.
